Abstract
Congenital atresia of intestine occurs rarely, approximately once in 20, 000 newborn babies. It is the most common cause of intestinal obstruction in neonatal period. The first successful surgical treatment for an intestinal atresia was by Fochens in 1911. Surgical therapy was followed by high mortality but the list decade has witnissed a significant increasing number of successfully treated cases in the literatures.
Further reductions in morbidity and mortality will probably accure more from improvements in a better understanding of the pathophysiology and fluid therapy of the various anomalies, earl ier diagnossis and operation, and preoperative and postoperative care.
Of the 13 total patients seen at Severence Hospital during last 5 years from 1968.to 1972, there were 4 with duodenal atresia or stenosis and 9 with jejunoileal atresia or stenosis.
This report is concerned with our experiences of cases surgically repaired 13 cases of intestinal atresia and review of the changing concepts in the management of intestinal atresia in the literatures.
